Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing the gāndharva's words, the bull of the Bhārata lineage, Arjuna, shone with joy, like the full moon.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: गंधर्व के शब्दों को सुनकर, भरत वंश का बैल, अर्जुन, पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा की तरह खुशी से चमक उठा।
His curiosity was excited by what he had heard about Vaśiṣṭha's ascetic powers. The best of the Kuru-s, the great archer, spoke to the gāndharva,

O lord of the gāndharva-s! Tell me who this illustrious riṣi, the priest of our ancestors, was."

The gāndharva said: "Desire and anger, which even the gods find difficult to conquer, were overcome through his austerities and washed his feet.

Though the supreme sage's wrath was stirred at Viśvāmitrā's evil deed, he was noble enough not to annihilate the Kuśika-s.

Though he mourned the death of his sons, and had the power to do so, he did not perform any terrible deed to destroy Viśvāmitrā.
यद्यपि उसने अपने पुत्रों की मृत्यु पर शोक व्यक्त किया था, और उसके पास ऐसा करने की शक्ति भी थी, फिर भी उसने विश्वामित्र को नष्ट करने के लिए कोई भयानक कार्य नहीं किया।
Like the great ocean does not cross its shoreline, he did not transgress Yāma's law by bringing his sons back from the land of the dead.
जैसे महान महासागर अपनी तटरेखा को पार नहीं करता, उसने अपने पुत्रों को मृत्युलोक से वापस लाकर यम के नियम का उल्लंघन नहीं किया।
Obtaining this greatsouled and self-controlled supreme riṣi Vaśiṣṭha as their priest, Ikṣvāku and other kings conquered the entire earth.
इस महान आत्मा वाले और आत्मसंयमी परम ऋषि वशिष्ठ को अपने पुरोहित के रूप में प्राप्त करके, इक्ष्वाकु और अन्य राजाओं ने पूरी पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त की।
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! These kings performed many sacrifices.
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! इन राजाओं ने अनेक यज्ञ किये।

स हि तान्याजयामास सर्वान्नृपतिसत्तमान् ब्रह्मर्षिः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ बृहस्पतिरिवामरान्
O best of the Pāṇḍava-s! This brahmarṣi was the priest for those excellent kings, like Bṛhaspati was for the gods.
हे पांडवश्रेष्ठ! ये ब्रह्मर्षि उन उत्कृष्ट राजाओं के पुरोहित थे, जैसे बृहस्पति देवताओं के थे।
Therefore, look for a Brāhmaṇa in whose heart dharma is supreme, who is learned in the Veda-s and in dharma and who has all the qualities, and appoint him as your priest.
इसलिए, एक ऐसे ब्राह्मण की तलाश करें जिसके हृदय में धर्म सर्वोच्च हो, जो वेदों और धर्म का विद्वान हो और जिसमें सभी गुण हों, और उसे अपना पुजारी नियुक्त करें।
O Pārtha! A Kṣatriya of noble birth who wishes to conquer the earth must first appoint a priest to be in front, so that the kingdom flourishes.

A king who wishes to conquer the earth must have a Brāhmaṇa before him. Therefore, let a Brāhmaṇa who has all the qualities be your priest."
